Leveling your Travel Trailer
One of the best ways to ensure a comfortable, stable experience while RV camping in your travel trailer is to level it. Of course, not every travel trailer knows how to properly level. Luckily, this guide from the experts at Mattas Marine will tell you everything you need to know.
Find a Suitable Location
The best way to make your leveling experience easier is to find a stretch of flat, even ground. That way, you’re not trying to compensate for uneven ground or loose material that can shift under your trailer’s weight. A concrete slab like those found at most RV campsites is perfect. If conditions are less than ideal, try to find the best spot possible and work with what’s available.
Level from Side to Side
Before you detach your travel trailer from its tow vehicle, use a level to determine which side (if any) will need to be raised and by how much. Move the entire unit forward so that you can place leveling blocks or boards where your tires will eventually go. Then, back up so that you can check the evenness. Repeat this process over and over, making small adjustments each time, until you’re satisfied that the trailer is level from side to side. You can then secure the wheels and disconnect the tow vehicle.
Level from Front to Back
Luckily, the process of leveling your travel trailer from front to back is much simpler. Just keep adjusting using your jack until the level tells you that things are even, and then lock your hitch.
Stabilize
The last step is to stabilize your travel trailer to help ensure that it stays level. A lot of current travel trailer models have automatic jacks, though if your model doesn’t you’ll need to use a special tool to stabilize your trailer. Using your jacks to level the trailer is not recommended since adjusting one will usually force you to make adjustments to the other three jacks as well. You can try attaching the stabilizing tool to a power tool like a drill to help make the level process more efficient. Make sure your jacks are firmly pressing into the ground without shoving into it.
